BACK to the Future: A Statistical Look At BJJ Submissions

Of all the positions in BJJ and MMA, back control is the most dominant for the attacker and offers the least amount of offense for the recipient.

There are SOME sneaky attacks from being trapped in back control (you wouldn’t rely on them), but the onus on the victim is predominantly to escape and regroup.

In competition, getting to the back is worth the highest amount of points, as is achieving the mount. However, escaping the mount is often the first thing you learn and despite the bridge and roll only ever working on a compliant partner or in the bedroom, our first building blocks for BJJ involve creating a matrix around possible mount escapes.

The back is much harder to escape. Particularly with variations of the hooks, such as body-triangles and cancelling a defending arm with one of the hooks, it is difficult to protect your throat and try to escape the position at the same time.

For these reasons, we should always endeavor to advance to the back, where the chances of winning are exponentially greater and the chance of defense is exponentially lower.

High level BJJ players profess to enjoy taking the back against larger opponents in open-weight divisions and in the MMA world the highest percentage of submissions comes from the Rear Naked Choke.

Rendering an opponent unconscious is an extremely valid self-defense strategy and should be the focus of women’s self defense programs. There are dozens of chokes available from all positions and these options could swiftly end an altercation and more favourably than potentially just dislocating an elbow joint and leaving an attacker conscious, enraging them further.

Bouncers and security guards worldwide know the consequences of disabling a rowdy hooligan with excessive force and the prevalence of camera footage makes it impossible to subdue someone with strikes. The problem with restraining holds is that the scoundrel is still able to attempt to strike, bite, spit and escape to an attacking situation. In these instances, it is much safer for bystanders if the law enforcement can apply a choke, completely resolve the situation and then attend to the incapacitated offender and assure their safety when they are in a calm -often highly apologetic- state.

Getting to the choke is an absolutely fundamental aspect for martial artists and should be pursued with ambition.

Here are some cheeky back takes from a semi defensive half-guard position that utilizes the Knee-shield to control distance.

Once you get to the back, actually sinking the choke can be a whole different kettle of fish.
